How teeth whitening works

Tooth enamel is not solid glass. It is a dense mineral structure with microscopic porosity, and over years the pigments in coffee, tea, red wine, curry, tobacco and dark berries work their way into it. Surface stain comes off with a cleaning; the stain that has soaked in does not.

Professional teeth whitening uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into oxygen molecules small enough to move into the enamel and split the colored compounds into smaller, colorless ones. The tooth is not coated, bleached in the household sense, or stripped — the pigment is chemically broken apart in place.

That is also why teeth whitening has a natural ceiling. It can remove stain, but it cannot change the underlying color your enamel and dentine were built with. The American Dental Association makes the same distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic discoloration.

In-office Zoom vs take-home trays

In-office Zoom teeth whitening takes about ninety minutes in one appointment. Your gums and lips are isolated, a professional-strength gel is applied in several cycles and activated with a light, and you leave with the result already visible. It suits anyone with a date in the diary, and anyone who knows they will not keep up with trays at home.

Custom take-home trays are made from a scan of your teeth so the gel sits against the enamel rather than leaking onto the gums. You wear them for a set period daily over one to two weeks. The result is comparable, it arrives gradually, and you keep the trays for topping up in future years — which makes this the better long-term value for most people.

Both together is what we most often recommend. Zoom teeth whitening does the heavy lifting in one visit, and the trays hold the result and let you maintain it without repeating the in-office appointment.

Which stains respond and which do not

This is the part that decides whether you will be pleased with the outcome, so we check it before you book.

Responds well. Yellowing from age, and staining from coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curry and tobacco. These are the everyday cases and they typically lift several shades.

Responds partially. Greyish discoloration, which is more stubborn than yellow. Mild tetracycline banding from childhood antibiotics may lighten with extended tray use over several weeks, but will not disappear.

Does not respond. White or brown fluorosis spots, which sometimes look more obvious afterwards because the surrounding tooth lightens around them. A single dark tooth after trauma or a root canal, which needs internal whitening or a veneer instead. And crucially, any existing dental work.

That last point catches people out. Teeth whitening has no effect on crowns, veneers, bridges or tooth-colored fillings — they keep whatever shade they were made in. If you have a crown on a front tooth, whitening the teeth around it will make it stand out, and the fix is to replace that restoration afterwards to match. We will point this out before you start rather than after.

Wondering how white you can actually get?

We will look at your teeth and tell you honestly what whitening can and cannot do.

What to expect, step by step

1. Examination

We check for decay, cracks, gum disease and exposed root surfaces. Whitening an untreated cavity is uncomfortable and pointless, and peroxide on inflamed gums stings. This step is not a formality.

2. Cleaning

A hygiene visit first removes surface deposits, so the gel works on the enamel rather than on plaque and tartar. Some patients are content with the shade after this alone.

3. Shade record

We record your starting shade against a guide and photograph it. Memory is unreliable about color — almost everyone underestimates how much their teeth have changed, which is why the before photograph matters.

4. Treatment

Either the in-office Zoom teeth whitening appointment, or trays made and fitted with instructions for use at home.

5. Review

We check the result against the starting shade, discuss maintenance, and plan any restorations that now need matching to the new color.

Sensitivity, and how we manage it

Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of teeth whitening, and it is worth knowing what is normal. Peroxide passes briefly through the enamel and can irritate the nerve, producing short sharp twinges — often called zingers — for a day or two afterwards. It is transient, it does not damage the tooth, and it settles.

What reduces it: using a desensitising toothpaste with potassium nitrate for two weeks beforehand, shorter wear times with trays, spacing sessions out rather than pushing through, and avoiding very hot and very cold drinks for the first day or two.

Tell us if you already have sensitive teeth. We adjust the concentration and the protocol rather than putting you through a standard regime and hoping. Exposed root surfaces from gum recession are the one situation that genuinely needs care, because root dentine is far more reactive than enamel.

Worried about sensitivity?

We take steps before and after to keep it manageable, and we explain exactly what to expect.

Is teeth whitening safe? And what about the shop-bought kits

Professionally supervised whitening has a long safety record. Peroxide at these concentrations does not soften or thin enamel in any clinically meaningful way, and the effects on the nerve are temporary.

The risks come from what is around the teeth, not the teeth themselves. Gel on the gums causes chemical burns, which is precisely what a custom tray or professional isolation prevents. Over-the-counter kits with one-size mouthpieces leak, which is why gum irritation is the most common complaint with them. Their gels are also weaker, so the result is milder.

Two things we would steer you away from. Charcoal pastes are abrasive: they scrub surface stain and, used regularly, wear enamel — and thinner enamel shows more of the yellow dentine underneath, so the long-term effect is the opposite of what is wanted. And salon or mall whitening by non-dental staff involves no examination at all, so decay and gum disease go unnoticed.

Internal whitening for a single dark tooth

One front tooth noticeably darker than its neighbors is a different problem from general yellowing, and standard teeth whitening will not solve it. The discoloration comes from inside the tooth — usually blood pigments released after a knock, or the breakdown of pulp tissue after the nerve has died.

The treatment is internal bleaching, sometimes called walking bleach. If the tooth has already had a root canal, a small access opening is made, the whitening agent is sealed inside the tooth, and it works outward over several days. It is usually repeated two or three times until the shade matches, and the access is then restored invisibly.

It is a conservative option worth trying before anything more involved, because it removes no tooth structure at all. Where it does not go far enough — a very dark tooth, or one that has already lost structure — a veneer or a crown is the next step, and we will be straightforward about which is likely from the start.

If the tooth is dark but has not had a root canal, we test the nerve first. A dying nerve needs treating on its own terms, and whitening over an untreated problem simply hides it.

Planning teeth whitening around a wedding or event

Most of the disappointment we hear about comes from timing rather than from the treatment, so here is a workable schedule.

Three months out. Examination and hygiene visit. Any decay or gum problems get treated now, because whitening on top of them is uncomfortable and often has to be postponed anyway.

Six to eight weeks out. Do the teeth whitening. This leaves room to repeat a session if you want to go further, and it lets any sensitivity settle entirely.

Four weeks out. If you have front crowns, veneers or fillings that now look out of step, this is when they are replaced to match the new shade. Restorations should always be matched after whitening, never before.

Two weeks out. A top-up night or two with your trays if needed, then stop. Leave time for the shade to stabilise.

The week itself. Nothing new. This is not the moment to try a treatment for the first time.

Booking teeth whitening three days before a wedding is the one scenario we will gently talk you out of.

Making teeth whitening last

Results typically hold for one to three years, and the range is almost entirely down to habits rather than to the treatment.

  • The first 48 hours matter most. Enamel is temporarily more porous, so avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola, soy sauce, tomato sauce, curry and berries. A pale diet for two days protects weeks of result.
  • Use a straw for iced coffee and cola afterwards. It genuinely reduces contact with the front teeth.
  • Rinse with water after anything darkly colored. Do not brush immediately after acidic drinks — wait thirty minutes.
  • Top up with your trays. One or two nights every few months holds the shade far better than repeating the whole process later.
  • Stop smoking. Tobacco restains faster than anything else on this list.
  • Keep your hygiene visits. Professional cleaning removes new surface stain before it settles in.

Frequently asked questions

How many shades will my teeth lighten?

Most patients see several shades of improvement, with everyday coffee and tea staining responding best. We record your starting shade so the change is measured rather than guessed at.

How long does Zoom teeth whitening take?

About ninety minutes in a single appointment, including preparation and isolation of the gums and lips.

How long do the results last?

Typically one to three years, depending on diet and whether you smoke. Occasional top-ups with take-home trays extend that considerably.

Does teeth whitening damage enamel?

No. Professionally supervised whitening at these concentrations does not meaningfully affect enamel. Abrasive charcoal pastes are a genuine risk to enamel; peroxide gels used correctly are not.

Will it work on my crowns or veneers?

No. Porcelain and composite keep the shade they were made in. If you have visible restorations, whitening the natural teeth around them may make them stand out, and matching them afterwards means replacing them.

Can I whiten if I have sensitive teeth?

Usually yes, with preparation. Two weeks of desensitising toothpaste beforehand, shorter wear times, and spacing sessions out make a large difference. Tell us at the consultation.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

We generally advise waiting. There is no strong evidence of harm, but whitening is elective and easily postponed, so the cautious course is the right one.

What age can teeth whitening start?

We would not whiten before the late teens, once the permanent teeth are fully erupted and the nerve chambers have matured.

Are the drugstore strips worth trying?

They lighten mild staining and they are inexpensive. The gels are weaker and the one-size trays leak onto the gums, which is where most of the irritation comes from. They are also used without an examination.

Why is one of my teeth darker than the rest?

Usually a tooth that was knocked at some point or has had a root canal, where the discoloration comes from inside. External whitening will not fix it; internal whitening or a veneer will.

Can I eat normally afterwards?

Yes, but keep to pale foods and drinks for the first 48 hours while the enamel is temporarily more porous. That short window protects the result.

Should I whiten before other cosmetic work?

Always. Whiten first, let the shade stabilise for about two weeks, then match any crowns, veneers or fillings to the new color. Doing it the other way round means redoing the restorations.

Can I combine teeth whitening with a cleaning on the same day?

We prefer to clean first and whiten afterwards, ideally at a separate visit. Removing plaque and tartar lets the gel reach the enamel evenly, and gums are often slightly tender straight after a thorough cleaning, which makes the whitening appointment less comfortable than it needs to be. A week between the two is ideal.

Will teeth whitening help if my teeth are just naturally yellowish?

Often yes, though expectations matter. Everyone has an underlying dentine color that shows through the enamel, and that baseline cannot be changed by peroxide. Whitening removes accumulated stain and takes you back toward your natural best, which for most people is a visible improvement. If you want to go beyond that baseline, veneers are the only route, and we will say which category you fall into at the examination.
